Inspired by Katie, make-up to protect you from acid
A DOCTOR has credited Katie Piper for inspiring her to invent what she says is the world’s first ‘acid-proof’ make-up.
Dr Almas Ahmed reckons she has spent ten years formulating a compound for use in cosmetics to protect wearers from acid burns.
She says the compound, known as Acarrier, will not react with any corrosive substances such as acid. It is currently being included in a foundation cream and Dr Ahmed hopes to develop a moisturiser and sun cream in future.
Dr Ahmed, 32, has spent £60,000 of her own money developing it and hopes it will be approved by UK medicine regulators soon.
Dr Ahmed, from Bradford, said: ‘The idea first came about when I was in university and heard about Katie Piper on the news. It was really heartbreaking. This product is basically just a foundation.
‘It looks, feels, smells, works just like regular make-up, but it’s completely heat-proof and acid-proof. You can’t burn it.’
The foundation is said to be made up of very strong bonds which make it impenetrable and has a high heat resistance.
After medical school, Dr Ahmed started her career as a research physician in neurosurgery.
Miss Piper has rebuilt her life after surviving an acid attack in 2008, when she was 24. She is now a TV presenter and was a contestant in the current series of Strictly Come Dancing.
