Meghan’s slip-up

She wears dress with shop label still on it

WITH three changes of dress in a day, there was always a good chance that something would go amiss.

And yesterday the Duchess of Sussex suffered an unusual fashion faux pas as she arrived in Tonga with the sales tag of her stunning £345 Self Portrait dress still hanging from the hem.

The offending ticket could clearly be seen as the couple walked the red carpet at Fua’amotu airport after their flight from Fiji.

Self Portrait is an edgy label that has been worn previously by the Duchess of Cambridge and Meghan’s eye-catching red dress was a subtle nod to the Tongan flag.

Her gesture did not go unnoticed among the thousands of well-wishers that turned out to greet them from the tiny Pacific Island nation.

The tag mishap was a minor slip on a day that saw Meghan and Prince Harry begin by waking up in a secluded villa on Vatuvara, a private island in Fiji.

It concluded with a dinner hosted by King Tupou VI and Queen Nanasipau’u of Tonga in the capital, Nuku’alofa.

In Fiji, the duchess wore a green £2,200 Jason Wu dress with gold leaf earrings during a welcome ceremony in the city of Nadi at which Harry drank a cup of the potent local brew, kava.

By the time they dined with the king of Tonga, Meghan had made her second costume change of the day, putting on a white column evening dress with bejewelled shoulders by Theia Couture.

On her finger was the turquoise ring, once owned by Harry’s mother Princess Diana, that she first wore on her wedding day.

During a reception and state dinner, Meghan, who is believed to be around 14 weeks pregnant, was advised to ‘take care of herself ’ by a Russian doctor, Miriam Cato.

Mrs Cato said: ‘I asked, how does she feel? She responded, “Very well, thank you.” I said, “No visible signs yet!”’

That prompted the duchess to look down at front of her dress and laugh in agreement.

Mrs Cato, 41, added: ‘As a doctor I was a bit concerned about her taking all these long trips. I’m a mother of two. I know how it feels. I asked her to take care of herself. She promised to do so.’

Pregnancy also came into the conversation when the royal couple chatted to Melenaite Tangi, 72, who recalled meeting Charles and Diana at a garden party in Auckland during the couple’s tour of New Zealand in 1983.

‘1983?’ replied Harry. ‘That’s the year before I was born. Was she pregnant? Secretly?’
