Kane happy to hand armband back to Rooney

- By MATT BARLOW and SAMI MOKBEL

HARRY KANE is ready to hand the captain’s armband back to Wayne Rooney and has revealed how senior England players discussed the controversial tribute for the country’s record scorer with manager Gareth Southgate. ‘We spoke about doing something for the players who have amazing milestones, amazing international careers,’ said Kane. ‘Me and the gaffer and a couple of the players. I didn’t know it was going to be this week but I knew it was an idea that Gareth wanted to do. ‘I think it’s great. Wayne is one of our greatest ever players and it’s a shame his international career just stopped. So why not give him the send-off he deserves?’ Rooney, 33, is expected to win his 120th England cap as a substitute in next Thursday’s friendly against the United States at Wembley. Southgate was criticised when the plan was unveiled but it has the resounding support of the man who succeeded Rooney as England captain. ‘We should all appreciate what he has done for us and given to us

over a long period of his life — not just his career,’ said Kane (above). As for handing over the armband, Kane said: ‘If he plays, of course he’ll be the captain.’ Meanwhile, Southgate’s plans for the games against the USA and Croatia have been hit by injuries. Liverpool defender Joe Gomez, who has an achilles problem, hopes to be selected, but Southgate will decide before today’s squad announcement. Leicester central defender Harry Maguire has a knee injury and Tottenham left back Danny Rose will miss out with a groin injury. Southgate also has concerns over midfield trio Jordan Henderson, Eric Dier and Dele Alli, which could see Adam Lallana and Ruben Loftus-Cheek earn recalls. Jadon Sancho of Borussia Dortmund is expected to keep his place in the squad and Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson is hoping for a first call-up.
