NOVEMBER 8, 1911 A SeCONd Nobel Prize is to be awarded to Marie Curie, the eminent Polish/French scientist who, with her late husband, Professor Pierre Curie, discovered radium. In 1903, Mme Curie received, jointly with her husband, the Nobel Prize for Physics. Her latest award is for chemistry. [She was the first to win or share a second Nobel Prize]. NOVEMBER 8, 1940 LAuReNCe Olivier is hoping to join the RAF on returning to Britain. The renowned actor will leave Hollywood after playing Nelson opposite Vivien Leigh in Lady Hamilton. [In 1941, Olivier joined the Fleet Air Arm and completed 456 flying hours.]

PAuL McKeNNA, 55. The multi-millionair­e dyslexic hypnotist started out as a dj, at Radio Topshop then later at Radio 1. He became fascinated by altered states after interviewi­ng a hypnotist on his show. He has sold more than three million selfhelp books, and married his PA Kate davey after creating a spreadshee­t ‘to find out who I really loved’. gORdON RAMSAY, 52. The celebrity chef earned nearly £50million last year, making him the 33rd highest-paid entertaine­r in the world, according to Forbes business magazine. In 2005, he sparked outrage by tricking a vegetarian into eating a hamtopped pizza on a TV show. However, this year, he said he was going to try veganism.

edMONd HALLeY (1656-1742). The english scientist was the second Astronomer Royal and a geometry professor at Oxford university. Halley’s Comet that is named after him, is visible from earth every 75 to 76 years. Halley and Isaac Newton once dissected a dolphin found in the River Thames, on the table of a London coffee house. SIR KeN dOdd ( 19272018). The buck-toothed comedian from Knotty Ash, Liverpool, also had chart hits, with songs including Happiness and Tears, which knocked The Beatles off the top spot in 1965. He got a guinness World Record in 1974, by telling 1,500 jokes in three-and-a-half hours

IN 1602, the university of Oxford’s Bodleian Library opened. It is now the second largest in Britain (behind the British Library), with more than 12 million printed items.

IN 1987, 11 people were killed by an IRA bomb at a Remembranc­e day service at enniskille­n, Co Fermanagh. A 12th victim went into a 13-year coma and died in 2000.
