IF this enchanting creature crossed your path, you might mistake it for a mountain wolf.

In fact, it is a rare silver fox – recently discovered roaming a backyard in a small Cheshire town.

The RSPCA is looking after the animal, which was spotted by a shocked homeowner in Alsager.

Named Shadow by the charity, he is thought to have been a pet due to his tame temperament.

Lee Stewart, who manages the centre where he is being kept, said he was the first silver fox it had seen. They are the same species as reds but have melanism, meaning a dark pigment appears on the skin.
