HAVING a white smile can seem like a luxury that only the rich and famous can afford. But, in fact, the latest developments in cosmetic dental surgery bring beautiful, even teeth within reach. A great smile is our most important personal asset, according to 92 per cent of people. So it’s no wonder that more of us are making use of a new dental technique — with numbers set to double in 2019. Around five million people in Britain have no teeth or are missing multiple teeth. Many millions more have severe gum disease and are in danger of losing their remaining teeth. And this can increase the risk of serious illness such as heart disease, dementia and strokes, according to research. As part of the new procedure available at a Harley Street surgery, patients can have four to six dental implants placed on the upper or lower jaw in the morning, and brandnew bridges of teeth fixed in the afternoon. So they can go home the same day with a new set of teeth. It can take years off the appearance, which can be life-changing.
