SWEET AND FORTIFIED

-

NV Morrisons Amontillado, Jerez, Spain (1 litre, £7.15, Morrisons)

THIS value-packed sherry is made by the famous Lustau wine company and it is smooth, rich, nutty and figgy. It’s aged for eight years in oak barrels. The process mellows the wine considerably and the results are hypnotic. Drink it slightly chilled and fear not if you don’t finish the bottle because the flavour will hold well for a fortnight.

NV Torres Floralis Moscatel, Penedès, Spain (50cl bottle, £8.29, reduced to £6.79 until January 1, Waitrose; £8, Morrisons)

FLORALIS is one of the great pudding wines — but, at Christmas, it comes into its own. The mandarin peel and caramel tones work with every indulgent dessert you can think of, including mince pies and Christmas pud. It looks the part and the price is knockout, too, so don’t delay!

NV Tio Pepe Fino Sherry, Spain (£10.49, reduced to £8.49 until January 1, Waitrose; widely available)

ONE of the world’s most famous sherries is also one of the greatest value wines on the shelves. Tio Pepe has been a mainstay brand for 169 years because the standard set by this company is nothing short of stellar. You simply must have a bottle of this in your fridge door to zap your palate to attention before a big feast.

2017 Château de la Roulerie Coteaux du Layon, Loire, France (Half bottle, £12.50, Oddbins)

SWEET wines from the Loire, made from Chenin Blanc, are some of the most magical and memorable in the world. While they might not be particularly fashionable in the UK, in Paris they are drunk both before and after dinner, such is their popularity. This is a top-quality wine with a lemon balm and honey theme. It’s enchanting and soothing after a huge dinner!
