BLIZZARDS and plummeting temperatures are set to cause chaos for shoppers on one of the busiest weekends before Christmas.

Amber warnings for snow and ice have been issued for much of northern England and Scotland. The Arctic conditions could cause major travel disruption and power cuts – with the worst of it expected to arrive today.

Becky Mitchell, from the Met Office, said there will be ‘a mixture of sleet, snow and freezing rain coming through.’ While the North will bear the brunt of the cold air from Scandinavia, the South could see temperatures reach 13C (55F).
