Fans urged to report racism in the stands

THE Premier League have taken the unprecedented step of urging supporters to report any incidents of racism this weekend. English football is under a cloud following two high-profile racism storms, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (below) and Raheem Sterling the victims of alleged slurs. Chelsea fans were condemned by their own club on Thursday for anti-semitic chants during their Europa League game against MOL Vidi. Sportsmail revealed earlier this week that Premier League bosses feared the incidents would damage the global brand they have worked hard to build. Top-flight bosses have come under growing pressure this week to respond to the unsavoury episodes amid concerns the problem of racism in English football is rearing its head again. And yesterday the Premier League called on fans to behave going into the busy festive period. The statement read: ‘Some brilliant football has been played this Premier League season and the vast majority of fans have generated exciting and passionate atmospheres in stadiums. However, there have been incidents recently where a very small minority have behaved unacceptably. ‘As we head into the festive season, with matches coming thick and fast, we ask all supporters to get behind their teams in passionate, positive and respectful ways. ‘Support for a club should never include excessive aggression or discrimination towards the opposition. ‘If anyone at a Premier League match witnesses unacceptable behaviour, please report it to a steward, or submit details on the Kick It Out reporting app or website.’
