Five who could face terror trials in UK
THE A-LEVEL DROPOUT
Jack Letts, 23, a British-Canadian Muslim convert from Oxford, travelled to Syria in 2014 after dropping out of his A-levels. Dubbed ‘jihadi Jack’, he was captured by the Kurdish-led People’s Protection Units (YPG) and has been imprisoned for the past 20 months. Letts converted to Islam while at Cherwell comprehensive school in Oxford.
THE ‘EXECUTIONER’
El Shafee Elsheikh, 29, a mechanic from London whose family fled Sudan in the 1990s, was captured in northern Syria in January. He is accused of being a member of the Islamic State execution squad known as the ‘Beatles’.
THE NHS DOCTOR
Muhammad Saqib Raza, 40, a doctor from Leicester, was accused of trying to radicalise NHS colleagues before travelling to Syria in 2016. He was captured in January, claiming he was not an IS fighter but a medic.
THE MUSLIM CONVERT
Muslim convert Alexanda Kotey, 34, is believed to have lived in west London until 2009 when he travelled to Gaza in an aid convoy. He is accused of being one of the ‘Beatles’ gang that murdered British and US citizens.
THE MAN WHO QUIT
Londoner Ashraf Mahmud Islam, 22, has been held for a year by Kurdish forces. He claims he travelled to the warravaged city of Raqqa in 2015 to ‘help the Syrian people’ before losing heart and surrendering.
