Rathhill to strike next for Nicky’s string of novices
NICKY HENDERSON appears to possess a never- ending conveyor belt of talented novice hurdlers this season and RATHHILL (Sandown, 2.25) could provide the Lambourn handler with another Grade 1 success in today’s Unibet Tolworth Novices’ Hurdle.
Mister Fisher, Birchdale, Angel’s Breath, Champagne Platinum and the potentially high- class Champ are just a small selection of the exciting novices at Henderson’s disposal this year and Rathhill looked assured of a place among the talented Seven Barrows assemble on his UK debut at Newbury before Christmas.
Runner-up in an Irish point-topoint prior to being bought privately by owner JP McManus, the close relation of Belshill could barely have made a more assured start to life this side of the Irish Sea at Newbury.
Perfectly positioned by rider Barry Geraghty throughout, Rathhill sauntered to the front at the final hurdle before being shaken up to quicken clear of a talented field.
Connections have reportedly had today’s feature in mind for some time and Geraghty’s ride certainly indicated that as he was at pains to give his mount the kindest introduction possible with a view to the future.
Hopefully, Rathhill can repay the kindness this afternoon with a second victory under rules and enhance his reputation and standing at his Lambourn base before heading to one of the spring festivals.
Naas stage a terrific novice hurdle event tomorrow with two of Ireland’s most exciting youngsters
BATTLEOVERDOYEN (Naas, 1.50) and Tornado Flyer going head-to-head in the Grade 1 Lawlor’s of Naas Hurdle. It is tough to separate the duo as both excelled and impressed on their hurdling debuts at Navan and Punchestown respectively, however Battleoverdoyen looked to have a fair bit left in the tank in scoring by 13 lengths and could find even more improvement now that he stretches out to two-and-a-half miles.
