Why on Earth was Liam Fox schmoozing celebs in LA?
THERE’S a crucial Brexit vote to be won at home, and countless countries to pursue deals with abroad. So where was our International Trade Secretary this weekend? At Bafta’s Golden Globes tea party, of course.
Liam Fox chatted with stars including Richard Madden and Olivia Colman at the bash in Los Angeles, in a trip that could raise eyebrows among MPs returning to Westminster today.
Speaking at the event, Dr Fox stressed that the creative industry is worth ‘about £100billion a year to the UK economy’.
He added: ‘It not only generates jobs in the UK, not only puts a lot of investment into the UK, but we get to export the products as well. So it’s a real win-win.’
Of the Golden Globes, he said: ‘It’s amazing that such a high proportion of those that are nominated are from the UK. Some of them are really long-overdue for international recognition. Olivia Colman I hope is going to be up there.’
Dr Fox did not attend last night’s ceremony, having left for Las Vegas where he will give a speech at the Consumer Electronics Show today. A spokesman said he will return to Britain on Wednesday.
