PETER SHILTON Ex-England goalkeeper

- BPI Peter Shilton was talking to Steve Curry

THERE is no question Manchester United owed their momentous victory to the ability and agility of David de Gea. Sometimes goalkeepers are not fully appreciated but nobody can question the impact De Gea had on this game. He made 11 saves in the second half and there is no argument he was the key man who delivered the points. There are so many different ways of keeping goal and the use of feet is one of them. How a goalkeeper uses his feet is a reflex action and can be a doubleedged sword. David used his feet to great effect but I didn’t always find it my safest way of keeping goal. I was much happier saving with my hands, which gives you more certainty of control. While I was always aware that my legs and feet were part of my armoury, I trusted my hands more. Feet are now a vital part of a keeper’s armoury but I’d rather be remembered for safe hands. There were other saves from David straight out of the top drawer. His reactions are electrifying, his reflexes so sharp. I remember playing for Derby against Newcastle and my manager Arthur Cox was so pleased with my performance that he asked me for my shirt. It would not be a surprise if Ole asked De Gea for his shirt last night.
