ALEX STEPNEY Ex-Man Utd goalkeeper

- Alex Stepney was talking to Simon Jones

YOU’D have to say after that performance David de Gea must be the best goalkeeper in the world. The number of saves he made with his feet, the speed of his reactions, that’s not just instinctive. That’s from the hard work he puts in on the training ground making sure those reflexes are super sharp. Not just that, his angles were tremendous. ELEVEN saves. It’s more than luck that he is in the right place at the right time. People like to compare goalkeepers at United and De Gea is alongside Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar. I can’t compare myself to David too much. The speed of the game, there’s no pass-back rule, the ball is lighter... he needs to be extremely quick to react. I can remember going to watch him against Real Madrid in a Champions League game in 2013 and he made some incredible stops with his feet. It wasn’t just his feet at Wembley. He used nearly every part of his body to make sure Tottenham didn’t score. He was brilliant. You’d maybe say Ederson at City and Alisson at Liverpool are closest to him, but David has the best all-round game. The beauty of his performance was how it lifted those around him. It’s been a while since I saw United’s defenders throw themselves into blocks and tackles, and celebrating when they stopped a cross. His display motivated the players in front of him. He gave them belief. For him though, I suspect the barometer won’t be a man of the match award, it will be what the club wins at the end of the season.
