Under the microscope

TV presenter Anthea Turner, 58, answers our health quiz

- Interview by GEMMA CALVERT

CAN YOU RUN UP THE STAIRS?

YES and it would traumatise me if I couldn’t. I’ve always been as fit as a fiddle and move quickly. If I’m going up the stairs, it’s two at a time. I don’t meander, unless in Harvey Nichols.

GET YOUR FIVE A DAY?

I DO, but I’m a picker and have to remind myself to eat properly. At my age I need to make sure I’m getting enough protein so I eat chicken and fish, and I love milk.

EVER DIETED?

NEVER. I lost a lot of weight when I was going through a big emotional trauma with my ex-husband, Grant Bovey, and looked ridiculously skinny. I’m 5ft 6in and was under 8st. I’m now 8 st 8lb (56 kg) in the morning, but not in the evening.

ANY VICES?

YOU can’t beat a proper chip. I come from the Midlands where there are chip shops everywhere.

ANY FAMILY AILMENTS?

NO. MY parents are both still alive and in their late 80s. My mum had a stroke but my dad is very fit.

WORST ILLNESS/INJURY?

I’VE had lots of horse riding injuries. Nine years ago I lost the cruciate ligament in one knee and the other was smashed in five places because a horse kicked me. More recently, I was shocked when a scan revealed I had osteopenia [a precursor to osteoporosis]. I’m now taking supplements, including vitamin D.

POP ANY PILLS?

I’VE had HRT for six years. After one hot sweat I thought: ‘I don’t want to put up with this’ and went straight on it.

EVER HAVE PLASTIC SURGERY?

I HAD my breasts done in 2003. I thought they could look better — I’m a very pragmatic person. Apparently you need to get them redone after ten years but mine are still really good. I’ve had Botox and Silhouette Soft [thread lift] in my cheeks and two in my neck. I believe in tidying up as you go along.

COPE WELL WITH PAIN?

REALLY well. I’m not a wimp.

TRIED ALTERNATIVE REMEDIES?

I’VE got a foot in both camps. Acupuncture is my go-to once a month for general wellbeing, but if I need a pill I’ll take it.

EVER BEEN DEPRESSED?

I HAVE been down because of something that happened but I’ve not had depression.

HANGOVER CURE?

INTRAVENOUS drips. If you’re feeling ropey with a hangover or you’ve come off a long haul flight they work a treat. I go to a clinic where they offer a vitamin and mineral drip.

WHAT KEEPS YOU UP AT NIGHT?

I USED to love a worry but I’ve had enough therapy to know that sometimes it’s just not worth it.
