FROM coconut oil to avocado treatments, many women have a closely guarded hair care secret.

TV and radio presenter Beverley Turner, however, has a particularly unusual way of keeping her locks looking good.

She has admitted washing her hair in her own urine, claiming it was ‘ better than shampoo’.

The broadcaster, married to Olympic gold medal rower James Cracknell, said she was inspired to try it by explorer Ben Fogle’s new survival programme.

New Lives In The Wild on Channel 5 featured Miriam Lancewood, who survives in the wild on only £3,000 a year with her husband and washes her hair in streams using urine.

While many viewers may have been repulsed by the idea, Miss Turner, 45, noted that despite living outdoors Mrs Lancewood had lovely, smooth hair and decided to try it out for herself.

She started by collecting her own urine, then rinsing her hair with water before dunking it into the urine.

‘ Of course, I was worried that the bathroom might take on the acrid stench of gents’ urinals,’ she wrote in the Daily Telegraph. ‘But I’m pleased to

report that it did not. Perhaps it was the large glass of Picpoul de Pinet I’d had before bed, but the aroma was surprisingly vanilla-like.’

Miss Turner added she was pleased with the results, and even left out her usual conditioner, having found that her hair was easy to brush. ‘ After a quick fiveminute messy blow-dry it sat more full of body than usual,’ she said.

‘ Fascinated, I combed my fingers through it as the day went on, surprised by how smooth it felt – rather like it had been washed in soft water, rather than the hard, limescale-inducing stuff we endure in London. Frankly, I was a convert.’

She went on to describe how the urine ‘rejuvenates’ hair follicles which stimulates growth and can help to treat scalp infections, itchiness and dandruff.

‘As a harassed, working mother-of-three – rather than a child-free nomad – I didn’t have the luxury of 20 minutes to stand and luxuriate in my own widdle,’ she said.

‘But I kept myself busy for five minutes wondering if Miriam shaves her legs and then I rinsed and rinsed and rinsed … paranoid that I might spend the day redolent of someone who is potty-training. I used extra shower gel all over and then went wild with the deodorant.’ Miss Turner, who has three children with Cracknell, is a former model who now presents her own radio show on LBC. Her unusual beauty secret comes on the back of recent bizarre trends.

Victoria Beckham reported that she had tried a face cream at a German clinic that was made from her own blood. And Australian supermodel Miranda Kerr said she had had a facial in which leeches were put on her skin.
