Their blueprints to block a no-deal exit
Theresa May will today table a ‘neutral’ motion on Brexit, which MPs can amend. The amendments are expected to include:
SCRAP NO DEAL
THE PLAN: Presses Government to rule out No Deal.
ITS EFFECT: Britain would not ‘crash out’ of the EU without an agreement. The aim is to safeguard jobs and business by preventing economic turmoil. But a No Deal outcome is an essential part of Mrs May’s negotiating strategy. If the EU knows we cannot leave without a deal – and keep our £39billion divorce payment – it has no incentive to give us a good one.
JEOPARDISE BREXIT
THE PLAN: Allows a minority of MPs to seize control of Commons business – including Brexit.
ITS EFFECT: Parliament would wrestle control of Commons business from the Government if backed by a minority of 300 MPs across five parties. Tearing up centuries of constitutional rules, backbenchers could table legislation to block No Deal – something only the Government can usually do. It could lead to Brexit being delayed or even scrapped, or a second referendum.
DELAY EXIT DAY
THE PLAN: Delays Brexit if we haven’t reached a deal.
ITS EFFECT: MPs triggered Article 50 in February 2017. Leaving on March 29 was then written into law. But under this amendment, if we don’t have a deal with Brussels by February 26, the withdrawal process would be halted. Brexit wouldn’t happen and Mrs May would return to negotiations.
