A cynical charade
ALL we demand of politicians is that they espouse what they believe, and believe what they espouse.
In this tortured Brexit debate, if a pragmatic solution is to be found, all the major players must be honest and open about where they stand.
Jeremy Corbyn has consistently claimed to have an open mind about a second referendum and about the future relationship Britain should have with the EU. All options were on the table.
But a newly-released video exposes these claims as sheer hypocrisy. In the aftermath of the 2009 Irish referendum rejecting the Lisbon Treaty, he denounces the EU as a ‘massive great Frankenstein’.
He lauds the No vote as ‘a boost to people like us that do not want to live in a European empire’. And he condemns calls for another referendum as a ruse to ‘keep you voting until they get the answer they want’.
Like all Marxists, Mr Corbyn despises the EU as a neo-liberal conspiracy between corrupt politicians and big business to exploit the masses.
He believed that in the 1970s and he believes it today. A politician of integrity would simply admit it, rather than acting out this cynical charade.
