Irish ‘border poll’ warning

BREXIT will spark a referendum on Irish unification, a former Irish prime minister predicted last night.

Bertie Ahern, a key figure in the Northern Ireland peace process two decades ago, said tensions raised by Brexit were likely to fuel demand for a so-called ‘border poll’. He told the BBC: ‘I wouldn’t say inevitable, but I do think you will see a border poll’, adding that Northern Irish residents who want to remain in the EU may welcome this.

Theresa May has been warned by ministers that No Deal could prompt a poll.
