Outrage as MP blocks FGM law
A LAW protecting girls from genital mutilation was blocked by a Tory MP yesterday.
Christopher Chope shouted ‘ object’ to prevent the progress of a private member’s bill allowing the courts to issue protection orders if they think a child is at risk.
Sir Christopher, 71, is known for objecting in principle to bills getting rubber- stamped on Friday sessions, arguing they should be subject to detailed scrutiny.
He also objected to legislation banning the taking of photographs up the skirts of unsuspecting women.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock tweeted: ‘Outraged. His actions are wrong, pure and simple.’
Sir Christopher told the Daily Telegraph he was in favour of the FGM legislation but wanted MPs to debate it properly.
