THIS is a good time to plant shallots. The easiest way is to grow them is from sets — individual offshoot bulbs from mature plants. For planting you will need a line and a trowel. Results will be best if the soil is a manageable tilth. Mark out your line and plant your shallot sets at 20 to 25 cm intervals, in rows 40 cm apart. Push each shallot into the ground until the nose is almost submerged.
