The former polytechnic that splashed out £592k
THE low-rated University of East London spent £592,000 on vicechancellor costs last year due to the unexplained departure of Professor John Joughin. He was paid a salary of £1 ,000, plus benefits worth £3,000 and pension contributions of £25,000. In addition, Professor Joughin received compensation for ‘loss of office’ totalling £183,000 – although it is not clear why. The former polytechnic is rated ‘bronze’ – the lowest grade – in the Government’s official Teaching Excellence Framework and is 109th in the Complete University Guide league table.
The total also includes £37,000 of health insurance, and the cost of having an ‘acting’ vice chancellor overlap for seven months.
Professor Joughin received a total pay packet of £294,000 in each of the two previous years – after a 13.5 per cent pay rise. The University of East London has just 13,090 students, compared with Manchester’s 38,590.
