May: I scrape mould off jam and eat what’s underneath

- By Jack Doyle Associate Editor

IT is advice which could have come from a Good Housekeeping guide – but it also applies to 10 Downing Street too.

Theresa May told her most senior ministers yesterday that she will not throw away a jar of jam if it has gone mouldy on top.

Instead, the Prime Minister said she scrapes off the mould and eats the good preserve left underneath.

Her hot tip came during yesterday’s Cabinet meeting in a discussion on how to reduce food waste.

Mrs May said once the mould is removed the rest of the jam is ‘perfectly edible’, a Whitehall source told the Mail. She also said food shouldn’t be binned just because it is past its best before date, saying shoppers should use ‘common sense’ to check if it is edible.

Her advice fits with that offered by chefs and health experts, who suggest scraping off the mould and a few centimetres below, to ensure any invisible spores are also removed.

Mrs May is said to be a keen cook, and her collection of cookbooks contains more than 150 titles.
