SUPER JAN PUTS ON AN ATTACKING MASTERCLASS

TOTTENHAM’S greatest strength is the versatility of their players. With doubts over the fitness of Danny Rose, Mauricio Pochettino asked centre half Jan Vertonghen to play as a left wing back. He responded with an assist and a goal. Jadon Sancho caused Spurs real problems in the first half but — as our graphic of Tottenham’s average positions (below) shows — Vertonghen (No5) stayed high up the pitch after the break and put him on the back foot. So perfect was Vertonghen’s cross for Son Heung-min’s goal that you almost had to check that it was not Christian Eriksen who had swung it in. He remained an attacking outlet and found himself in a centre forward’s position to score the second. Pochettino is fortunate to have players like Vertonghen (below) who don’t just fill in but deliver superb displays wherever they play.
