For pity’s sake, break open Brady’s briefcases

-

FOR more than 50 years, Keith Bennett’s family have had to live without knowing where the 12-yearold is buried on Saddleworth Moor. All they know is that his death was a terrible one, and that he suffered at the hands of Ian Brady and Myra Hindley. And still their torture goes on.

It has been disclosed that following his death in 2017, police have been refused a search warrant to go through Brady’s briefcases. They believe that they might contain information about where Keith’s body lies, something he taunted the police about for years.

However, the warrant was not allowed — on the grounds that as Brady and Hindley are dead, there is no chance of a prosecution. Surely if there is the tiniest chance that information relating to this poor boy’s horrible grave is contained in Brady’s papers, they should be handed over immediately.

On the grounds of basic common decency and compassion, which are more important than a box-ticking point of law.

There has been little comfort for the Bennett family since Keith disappeared. His own mother died in 2012 without ever discovering where her son was buried. It is cruel to let their sadness course on unabated, when this might bring a glimmer of succour.
