Help! My sensitive skin is leaving me anxious

- by Inge van Lotringen

I FEEL so sad and anxious about my looks. I’ve developed dark, baggy undereyes and droopy mouth corners, but if I dare to touch my skin, it flares up instantly. Please help.

Your letter worried me as you sound very down, so I talked about it with Dr Alia Ahmed, a pyschodermatologist (a skin doctor who also takes your overall wellbeing into account) at London’s Eudelo clinic.

‘The way you feel is not at all uncommon, but when it starts to impact daily life and interferes with overall happiness, social interactions, sleep and mood, it’ s important to seek medical attention,’ she says. A dermatologist with an interest in psychodermatology is best placed to help you with both your skin and your feelings.

She believes a good skincare regime and regular facials, as recommended by a dermatologist, can do the world of good.

Your sensitivity, she says, sounds like a common condition called demographism, which can be calmed with the help of your GP or dermatologist.

Professional treatments for dark circles include judiciously placed fillers and brightening chemical peels, but it is best to seek guidance from a sympathetic specialist.
