what to do

BALLET dancers have strong bodies. Try a barre conditioning exercise, if you want defined ankles, says celebrity personal trainer Nadya Fairweather ( u-shape.co.uk).

Using both hands, lightly hold the back of a chair. Stand with your feet side by side. Lift your heels off the ground keeping your body straight and tight, then lower. Ten slow, then 20 quick. Put feet shoulder width apart, toes pointing out, and repeat. Combine with stair climbs, power walking, or running, and a good stretch.

what to eat

CANKLES can sometimes be diet related, says nutritionist Shona Wilkinson ( shonawilkinson.com), and can be linked to fluid retention. Try to reduce your salt intake. Too much sodium can cause fluid retention and swelling. Parsley can act as a diuretic, which means it can reduce fluid retention. Dandelion and nettle can also have this effect so try adding them to soups, smoothies and tea. Some people try to drink less water if they have cankles. This is, in fact, the opposite of what you should do. If you don’t drink enough water, your body retains the existing water to reuse which causes fluid retention. Sip on water throughout the day.
