HAYDOCK INSIST SECURITY WAS UP TO SCRATCH

- MARCUS TOWNEND

HAYDOCK have denied they had inadequate security in place to deal with the ugly brawl that broke out on Saturday. The fight once again raised questions about the amount of alcohol served at racetracks, how much it contributes to outbreaks of violence and whether racecourse groups are putting profits from alcohol sales ahead of public safety. Merseyside Police said one man was arrested on suspicion of affray and possession of a controlled drug. Witnesses estimated that 40-50 racegoers were involved and social media users criticised the response of security. A spokesperson for Haydock Park said: ‘Our security teams were on hand to bring this under control and eject those involved, and we had ample security. Those involved will be banned. We take a zero-tolerance approach.’
