Sailor from victory kiss photo dies
THE ecstatic sailor who was photographed kissing a nurse in Times Square to celebrate the end of the Second World War has died aged 95.
George Mendonsa appeared in the celebrated picture after he embraced dental assistant Greta Friedman on August 14, 1945 – the day Japan surrendered. They had never met before.
Alfred Eisenstaedt’s photo – V-J Day in Times Square – was published in Life magazine.
Mr Mendonsa died after a fall at an assisted living facility in Middletown, Rhode Island, where he lived with his wife. Miss Friedman died in 2016 aged 92 in Richmond, Virginia.
