MOTSON APOLOGY FOR RACE GAFFE
JOHN MOTSON has apologised personally to Tom Elliott after the commentator described the Millwall striker as ‘big, black and brave’ on the radio.
Sportsmail exclusively revealed yesterday how the legendary broadcaster had been reprimanded by talkSPORT bosses for his comments during coverage of Millwall’s 1-0 win over AFC Wimbledon in the FA Cup fifth round on Saturday. And Motson, having asked Millwall’s permission, contacted Elliott on Monday to say sorry for his remarks. He admitted it was an error of judgment and apologised for any offence he caused. Elliott acknowledged the 73-year-old’s apology and made it clear he wants to draw a line under the controversy. Motson, one of the most revered broadcasters in the business, made the comments in reference to Elliott’s physical presence but his clear attempts to praise the centre forward have sparked controversy. Questions have been raised over why Motson made reference to Elliott’s skin colour. However, Millwall have a chant for the striker in which they refer to him being black. The broadcast has been removed from talkSPORT’s website so as not to cause further offence.
