Respect the rule of law
HAVING voluntarily travelled to Syria to join the pitiless fanatics of Islamic State, why should we allow Shamima Begum back into Britain?
She has shown no remorse, and many will sympathise with Home Secretary Sajid Javid’s decision to revoke her citizenship.
But are we being too hasty? Hard cases make bad law, they say, and this is one of the hardest. Much as we may regret it, Begum is British. For all her transgressions, she was made in England.
Shouldn’t she therefore come back to face British justice?
This country’s constitution is built on the rule of law. It’s what sets us apart from savages like those of Islamic State.
