Google’s ‘secret’ microphone in security gadget

-

GOOGLE has come under fire for failing to tell customers about a microphone in one of its home security systems.

The company said an ‘error’ meant the mic was not included in the specifications for the Nest Secure device.

Users found out after Google updated the gadget’s software allowing them to control it with their voice – which requires a microphone to work.

A Google spokesman yesterday apologised, explaining: ‘The microphone was never intended to be a secret and should have been listed in the tech specs. That was an error on our part.’

They added that the mic had not been switched on prior to the software update.

Silkie Carlo, of privacy group big brother Watch, said: ‘This appears to be deceptive rather than a “mistake”, which is incredibly damaging for public trust in Google.’

Nest Secure devices work by sensing movement in a room and alerting users via an app. They have been sold in the US, but are yet to go on sale in Europe.

Last year, a hacker took control of a Nest device – and was able to speak directly into the owner’s home.
