Tiny beach restaurant is best in world
A SMALL South African beach restaurant where staff forage for ingredients on the seashore has been named the best in the world.
Wolfgat – which offers a sevencourse tasting menu for just £46 (850 rand) – picked up the honour at the inaugural World Restaurant Awards in Paris.
Opened two years ago in Paternoster on the west coast, it caters for just 20 people at a sitting and employs six staff who have no formal training.
Dishes have included twicecooked laver seaweed and angelfish with bokkom sambal.
Head chef Kobus van der Merwe, 38, told AFP: ‘I don’t feel worthy. It’s a big title. My staff, who go out every day gathering herbs, succulents and dune spinach, should be here. It’s their baby.’
Noble Rot in London, where a bottle of wine costs up to £4,500, was named as the best red wine-serving restaurant.
