Ofsted chief: Teach primary pupils about gay families
SCHOOLS should teach children it is acceptable to have ‘two mummies or two daddies’, the head of Ofsted has declared.
Amanda Spielman said all pupils must be taught tolerance of same-sex relationships.
Her comments follow protests by Muslim parents outside Parkfield Community School in Birmingham over lessons that teach pupils aged four to 11 not to discriminate over gender, race, sexuality or religion.
Some said homosexuality was against their religion, while others said their children were too young for such subjects.
Mrs Spielman backed the school, telling the BBC: ‘It’s about making sure they know just enough to know that some people prefer not to get married to somebody of the opposite sex and that sometimes there are families that have two mummies or two daddies ... that children who do happen to realise that they themselves may not fit a conventional pattern know that they’re not bad or ill.’
Parkfield’s assistant head Andrew Moffat, who devised the lessons, has been shortlisted for the $1million (£766,000) Global Teacher Prize.
