City fan in fight for life after attack
A MANCHESTER CITY fan was fighting for his life last night after a violent attack at Schalke’s Veltins Arena.
Sportsmail understands the 32-year-old, who has not yet been named, was placed in an induced coma by medics. He suffered a traumatic brain injury caused by the ferocity of his fall from a punch swung by a Schalke supporter following City’s 3-2 Champions League victory on Wednesday night. He was treated at the stadium before being taken to hospital, where he remained in a critical condition. Two members of City staff have stayed in Germany, and another from the club’s safety team is flying out today to learn more details. Gelsenkirchen Police confirmed that ‘there is currently an acute danger to life’ and that they are appealing for witnesses with any information. They said: ‘In the skirmish, he received a blow from a fist which knocked him to the floor. In falling, he suffered a massive trauma to his skull and brain.’ Some City supporters at the game claimed there was a lack of segregation at the ground and that fans were able to mix openly inside and outside the stadium. A City statement read: ‘The club are working with Greater Manchester Police and German police to ascertain more information. Club staff have remained in Germany to support the family of an injured City fan, who is currently in a critical condition in hospital.’
