THE DAILY MAIL has been named SPORTS

NEWSPAPER OF THE YEAR at the annual SJA British Sports Journalism awards for the fifth time in six years.

Sportsmail also scooped the other big prize of the evening – SPORTS WEBSITE OF

THE YEAR – at the prestigious awards ceremony on Monday.

In a glittering night for the paper, the Mail’s JONATHAN MCEVOY was named Specialist Correspondent of the Year for his work on motor racing and the Cheltenham Festival.

DANIEL MATTHEWS was triumphant in the Young Sports Writer category – named after the Mail’s late, great Ian Wooldridge – a year on from Sportsmail’s Adam Crafton winning the same award.

Chief Sports Reporter MATT LAWTON –a four-time winner of Sports News Reporter of the Year – was also highly commended in the Sports Scoop category, which was dominated by the paper. His revelation that Premier League clubs were being asked to pay £ 50,000 each to fund a leaving gift for outgoing executive chairman Richard Scudamore was one of four Daily Mail entries shortlisted for the coveted award.

Cricket correspondent PAUL NEWMAN was also highly commended in the cricket journalist category.

Also shortlisted in the Special Sports Edition was THE VERDICT, the Mail’s brilliant Monday football pull-out featuring the hard-hitting opinions of Jamie Redknapp, Martin Keown and Chris Sutton as well as peerless Chief Sports Writer Martin Samuel.

Awarding the main prize to the Daily Mail, the judges said: ‘When all’s said and done, there is nothing to beat hard news.

‘In a fiercely competitive field, that ingredient enabled the Mail to edge the verdict in a photo-finish.’
