Pressure on YouTube to ban ‘hateful’ Robinson

- By Katherine Rushton Media and Technology Editor

GOOGLE is facing fresh calls to delete Tommy Robinson’s YouTube channel after it became the last of the web giants to continue giving him a platform.

The far-Right activist, whose real name is Stephen YaxleyLennon, had dozens of videos on the network yesterday despite Facebook and Twitter stripping him of his accounts for breaking their rules over ‘hate speech’.

In one, the English Defence League founder claimed there was a ‘rape jihad phenomenon... pretty much in every major town and city in our country.’ Another clip purported to show him punching a migrant in Italy.

Kate Green, Labour MP for Stretford and Urmston and a member of the home affairs committee, said: ‘ I congratulate Facebook on their action but he’s also posted hateful videos on YouTube, including one recorded in the heart of my very diverse constituency. I’m calling on YouTube to follow Facebook’s lead.’ Matthew McGregor, from the campaign group Hope Not Hate, said: ‘ Following Facebook’s decision, Stephen YaxleyLennon is only able to spew his anti-Muslim hate on YouTube and Gab. Is YouTube really happy to be in that company?’

Mr Yaxley-Lennon had more than a million followers on Facebook and used it to organise protests, including a gathering of 4,000 people in Salford last weekend to watch a documentary attacking the BBC.

Yesterday, he said Facebook acted against him in retaliation for the film Panodrama which intended to ‘expose’ the BBC’s underhand tactics. He said the technology giant was involved in a conspiracy with Hope Not Hate and the media to ‘bring me down and destroy me’.

Last month, YouTube stopped him from making money by removing ads from his account.
