‘Not all women are put on earth to have babies’

What doctor ‘told patient about to have abortion’

- By James Tozer

AN Oxford-educated gynaecologist told a patient ‘not all women are put on this earth to have babies’ as she prepared for a termination, a tribunal heard yesterday.

Dr Kieron Timothy Moriarty, 57, also allegedly told her: ‘Muslims come over here and try to bomb us back to the Dark Ages.’

On another occasion the NHS consultant obstetrician introduced himself by saying ‘I’m Dr Moriarty and I look after all the fallen women in Milton Keynes’, one of a series of inappropriate jokes in front of female staff at the abortion clinic where he worked, it was claimed.

Dr Moriarty was said to have thrown a temper tantrum and sworn when he was unable to find a piece of medical equipment, and also suggested a midwife would be in need of a sex toy after he learned her husband was going abroad. He was suspended after the midwife complained.

Dr Moriarty, who left his job at the British Pregnancy Advisory Service six months later, admits making some of the remarks but denies they were inappropriate. He says there was a ‘deliberate plan and a conspiracy’ to force him out.

The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service hearing was told the complaints began after he and the midwife, referred to as Miss B, repeatedly disagreed over procedures at clinics in Northampton and Milton Keynes.

The ‘fallen women’ comment was said to have been made as he stood near the clinic’s reception desk. Peter Horgan, lawyer for the General Medical Council, told the Manchester hearing it was an ‘inappropriate’ comment for a doctor in his position to make.

Later, as Miss B and an assistant were in theatre with a patient, Dr Moriarty allegedly said something along the lines of: ‘Don’t feel guilty about it, the Muslims come here and try to bomb us back to the Dark Ages, not all women are put on this earth to have babies.’

Miss B said the patient was upset at the time as she was having a termination.

Also that month when Miss B mentioned her husband was abroad, Dr Moriarty allegedly made reference to her needing to use a sex toy. Mr Horgan said: ‘The witness states she found it inappropriate and vile and she felt disgusted.’

Dr Moriarty, of Daventry, was suspended in July 2017 and left the following February. He denies misconduct and the hearing continues.
