IF HE PLAYS, THE INMATES ARE RUNNING THE ASYLUM

- CHRIS SUTTON

THE T decision of whether to drop Kepa Arrizabalaga is not a difficult one to make. What has Maurizio Sarri got to um and ah about? T The Chelsea goalkeeper u undermined him in a cup final while millions watched at home. What can a player do to a manager which is worse than what Kepa did to him? If Sarri does not drop Kepa a against Tottenham tonight, he will look weak. It would be him letting Kepa get his own way. Who’s in charge at Chelsea? It’s like the inmates are running the asylum. If I was a senior member of the squad, I wouldn’t be going to Sarri to say what I think, either, because it’s not up to the players. It’s up to the Italian to work it out for himself. Everybody saw what happened at Wembley. Both Sarri and Kepa claimed it was a misunderstanding, then released follow-up statements, but we saw the ridiculous situation unfold in front of our eyes. Willy Caballero watched it, too. He was kitted out and on the sidelines waiting to come on. The bottom line is, if your manager says you’re coming off, you go off. It never once entered my head to disagree with any of my bosses. You can show your frustration — sulk, shake your head, throw your top in the dugout in anger, walk down the tunnel, whatever. But you walk off. You don’t disobey an order. Sarri should have come out and said, ‘Yes, I intend to drop him against Tottenham’. It should be an easy decision.
