LANDSCAPE WITH WHEAT SHEAVES AND RISING MOON (1889); KILHAM TO LANGTOFT II, 27 JULY 2005
VAN GOGH’S view is from his bedroom at an asylum where he retreated after slashing his ear. Peering through bars, he captured an orange moon rising over the wheat field. Hockney’s is more optimistic, portraying his field under a strong sun fringed with contrasting greens.
