Outcry as university kills six dogs

-

SIX labradors used in an experiment at a Swedish university have been put down despite an international petition to save them signed by more than 80,000 people.

Animal welfare groups said they were shocked that the one-year-old dogs had been killed by scientists at the University of Gothenburg. The dogs had 35 per cent of their teeth pulled out to be replaced by dental implants. A university spokesman said: ‘They have been put down because we are taking biopsies and samples and tests, which could not be done on live dogs.’

Critics said the animals had died ‘for futile, curiosity-driven research’.
