HOW LAB TEST WORKS
Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is a type of embryo testing that can be used to screen out serious inherited conditions.
It can be used to prevent more than 500 genetic conditions in IVF couples.
During PGD, a single cell or small number of cells is removed from the embryo, which has been created in the lab by fertilising a woman’s eggs with sperm.
The cell DNA is tested for the dangerous gene a parent carries. Only embryos which are negative for this gene are placed into the mother’s womb.
