BRONCOS STUN CHAMPIONS

-

WIGAN’S poor start to the defence of their Super League title continued yesterday as they suffered a shock 18-16 defeat at London Broncos. Tries from Eddie Battye, Matt Gee and Kieran Dixon saw the Broncos claim their biggest scalp since promotion last season. Broncos head coach Danny Ward said: ‘Beating the champions at home is pretty special. It was a great performance from the boys. We’ve had a tough few weeks so when you get the win and play well, you have to enjoy it.’ Wigan had led with tries from Liam Paisley and William Isa but slipped to a third defeat in four games. Head coach Adrian Lam said: ‘The last 15 minutes of the first half, we collapsed. I understand the pressure we’re under so all I ask for is patience.’ Joe Westerman marked his 300th career game with two tries and Josh Griffin also struck twice as Hull FC won 28-8 at bottom-of-the-table Huddersfield. Giants head coach Simon Woolford accused his side of a lack of effort and resilience. He said: ‘Once we were under pressure we caved in.’
