SARRI’S STILL STRUGGLING TO WIN ROUND BLUES CHIEFS

- By SAMI MOKBEL

MAURIZIO SARRI faces a battle to persuade Chelsea he has a long-term future at the club, despite giving his squad a greater say on tactics. Sarri has relieved some of the pressure on his job thanks to back-to-back derby wins over Tottenham and Fulham, but his position remains in the balance. Having previously indicated he was unwilling to adapt his Sarri-ball philosophy, the Italian has softened his stance in recent weeks. The team appeared more pragmatic in the Carabao Cup final penalty shootout defeat by Manchester City and last week’s win over Spurs was a clear move away from the style of football used for most of the season. Speaking after Sunday’s win at Fulham, defender Antonio Rudiger hinted at Sarri adapting his tactics in recent weeks. ‘I think everyone has adapted to new things — also the coach,’ said the Germany international. ‘You saw the way we played against Tottenham and Manchester City. It was different to how we played in the first three months.’ Yet Sarri is still under scrutiny. Chelsea’s improved display against City in the Carabao Cup final saved Sarri (above) from the sack. Subsequent wins over Spurs and Fulham strengthened his position, but the Blues board still need convincing that Sarri is a good long-term bet. The club have identified a list of potential replacements, should they decide to ditch the 60-year-old. England No 2 Steve Holland is an option on an interim basis if they make a move before the end of the season. Chelsea would prefer to make a decision on Sarri’s future once the season is over. Securing a top-four place or winning the Europa League, both of which would hand Chelsea Champions League qualification, could give Sarri a stay of execution.
