Wind farms could supply 30% of power
A THIRD of Britain’s electricity could be generated by offshore wind farms by 2030, the Government said yesterday.
They currently meet around 7 per cent of our power needs but that should increase to more than 30 per cent within a decade. Whitehall officials said that by then 70 per cent of our electricity could be from low-carbon sources.
Announcing a plan to help the industry, energy minister Claire Perry said: ‘This new sector deal will drive a surge in the clean, green offshore wind revolution.’
Greenpeace said the 30 per cent target was too low, especially with problems in the nuclear industry.
