AS A retired police officer, I can’t understand how the prime Minister can state knife crime is not linked to the 22,000 police officers that, as home Secretary, she was instrument­al in getting rid of.

Due to the vacuum created by having so few police in our towns and cities, gangs of dealers, armed with knives and sometimes firearms, are fighting each other for the right to supply drugs in their area.

youths witness this behaviour and feel the need to carry knives to protect themselves, and the problem gets bigger and bigger. It’s going to be very difficult to get control back.
