Brexit trophy in sight
ENTRUSTED with teasing out last-minute Brexit concessions from the EU, Cabinet ministers Geoffrey Cox and Stephen Barclay are on standby for the train to Brussels.
Both sides insist they want a deal. But so far, Britain has faced posturing obstinacy. Jean-Claude Juncker’s Eurofanatics even sneer it should be an ‘unattractive divorce’. Is it any wonder we want to leave?
Without a compromise, MPs will vote on Tuesday over Theresa May’s decent, but flawed, agreement. Brexiteers have threatened to inflict a heavy defeat. But they should pause and reflect. Mrs May’s deal honours the referendum, including ending free movement.
Increasingly, the alternatives are a cotton wool-soft Brexit… or no Brexit. The trophy is within sight. To lose it would be foolish. IT is almost impossible to imagine Lorraine Jones’s overwhelming grief when her son Dwayne, 20, was stabbed to death stopping a fight in 2014. Instead of succumbing to hatred, she took over his boxing club – keeping 400 youngsters from the clutches of violent gangs. So there is no worthier winner of the Mail’s Inspirational Women Award. As Britain is darkened by a knife epidemic, she is a beacon of hope.
