£500k bill to get rid of speeding lie MP
TAXPAYERS will be hit with a £500,000 bill to pay for a petition to force out disgraced MP Fiona Onasanya because she has refused to quit.
Onasanya, 35, who served 28 days of a three-month jail sentence for lying to police over a speeding offence, has said she will not resign because the £77,000 MP’s salary is her only source of income.
But after she lost an appeal against her conviction on Tuesday, a recall petition will be opened in her Peterborough constituency next week. If 10 per cent of the electorate signs it, Onasanya, who has been thrown out of the Labour Party, will lose her seat and a by-election will be held.
Peterborough City Council, which is running the six-week process, has estimated it will cost £500,000.
