OLE SHOWS WHY WE MUST TRUST YOUTH

-

ONE of the most satisfying things about Manchester United’s victory over Paris Saint-Germain was the way Ole Gunnar Solskjaer trusted two young players — Tahith Chong and Mason Greenwood (below) — to help see out the game. Without 10 senior players in Paris, United’s bench was lacking experience but that did not faze Solskjaer. It did not matter that they had never been thrown into a match of this magnitude before. He looked at what they could bring — energy and tenacity against tiring legs — and sent them on. They were only on the pitch for a matter of minutes but will have gained so much from being part of a famous win. The following night, Callum Hudson-Odoi was handed another Europa League cameo for Chelsea against Dynamo Kiev. He was only given 12 minutes to impress and yet he replied with another goal. It feels like Maurizio Sarri is trying to keep this young man’s feet on the ground when he should be giving him his wings. Our academies are producing wonderfully talented players. It is time first-team managers gave them their chance to

shine.
