A FLOCK of angels hover above the Madonna and child, while richly dressed wise men proffer gifts. In the distance, shepherds tend their sheep and, in a doorway, a mysterious figure has been concealed. Cathy FitzGerald takes us deep into Jan Gossaert’s early-16th-century painting The Adoration Of The Kings for this week’s MOVING PICTURES (RADIO 4, 11.30AM) — a programme that can be further enhanced by zooming in on the image of the work on the Google Arts & Culture website.
THE young musicians of Collegium will have to ride their instruments hard in their performance of Biber’s 1673 work Battalia, which opens a RADIO 3 IN CONCERT (RADIO 3, 7.30PM) featuring Baroque music and Buenos Aires tango. They must hit the
strings with the wrong side of the bow, put paper along the neck to make the notes buzz and do a lot of fingerboard slapping — and the effect is dynamic.
KATHERINE PARKINSON (pictured), Marc Wootton and Catherine Tate are among the stars of the semi-improvised late-night comedy show DATE NIGHT (RADIO 4,
11PM) follows various couples whose relationships have hit the buffers as they embark on their weekly date nights. This is adult humour, with some of the sketches going on for too long, but there are some naughty laughs to be had.
